Sept.18--THE Virginia Port Authority has announced that in August its container terminals handled 220,069 TEU, an increase of 2.7 per cent from the same month last year.
"We are entering the peak of the retail season and we are handling the volume with greater efficiency and consistency than we did at this time last year," the authority's CEO John Reinhar said in a statement, reported Virginian Pilot.
"We set a record for volume in 2014 (2.5 million TEU) and we anticipate we'll set a new mark in calendar year 2015. We have had some difficult moments and continue to face challenges, but each month we continue to get better at handling these increasing monthly volumes."
Truck container volume in August was flat after rising just 0.3 per cent from a year earlier. Rail container volume rose three per cent, while barge container volume dropped 15.7 per cent.
