WCI: Trans-Atlantic Container Rates Inch Up

May.24--World Container Index Between New York and RotterdamFull-size imageTrans-Atlantic eastbound and westbound rates inched up in the week of May 23, according to the latest release of the World Container Index.
 
Westbound rates from Rotterdam to New York increased 0.3 percent or $7 per 40-foot container from last week. Rates in this lane hadn’t risen in 10 weeks, declining  17.3 percent or $424 during this period. The current rate is down 24 percent year-over-year and 16.7 percent or $409 from the beginning of 2013.
 
The eastbound rate from New York to Rotterdam also inched up by 0.3 percent to $1,608 per FEU, an increase of $5. Before this growth, the most recent increase in this lane, 1.5 percent, was five weeks ago in mid-April. The current rate is down 17.1 percent or $332 from the beginning of 2013 and down 22.6 percent year-over-year. The past 12 weeks have seen year-over-year drops.
